What exactly do orthodontists do?
Orthodontists are dental professionals that diagnose and treat abnormalities with tooth position, alignment, or spacing, as well as accompanying facial and jaw anomalies. To remedy these issues, we employ a variety of specialized treatments, including braces and other dental equipment.
Why should I (or my family members) get orthodontic treatment?
There are two compelling reasons for this: beauty and function. Having a beautiful grin not only impacts how others perceive you, but it also improves your own self-image. Orthodontic therapy also improves the function of your teeth and makes it simpler to keep them clean, which can benefit your general health.
When should I begin orthodontic treatment?
You may start orthodontic treatment at any age, but if you start early, your issues may be easier to fix. The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that a kid who may require orthodontic treatment have their first appointment around the age of seven.
How can I spot a possible biting problem?
Teeth that protrude, cluster together, or erupt incorrectly are evident signals that treatment is required (View Examples). Less evident symptoms include mouth breathing, frequent biting of the face or palate, speech problems, and thumb sucking beyond the age of 3-4 years. If teeth do not touch properly as the mouth closes, or if the jaws make noises or shift as they move, this might be an indication of an orthodontic issue.
Is it painful to receive braces? Why not put them on?
Braces are often painless to put on. Minor aches and pains may occur in the first few days or so as patients acclimatize to wearing their equipment; occasional adjustments may also cause soreness, but this usually lasts only a short time. Over-the-counter pain medicines can be used to treat pain, although they are typically unneeded.
Case Studies
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that performs the necessary treatments for the correction of incompatibilities in the teeth and jaws, and the crooked teeth. Orthodontists ensure that the jawbone and teeth are in the right position and in the right place. The correct positioning of the teeth is very important for both dental health and aesthetic appearance.
It is recommended to consult an orthodontist for a control examination when the children reach the age of 7.
What are the Conditions that Require Orthodontic Examination?
• If your child has the habit of thumb sucking,
• If a pacifier has been used for a long time (after 2 years of age),
• In cleft lip-palate conditions,
• If any of the milk teeth have been extracted early,
• If there is an impact to the jaw or missing teeth,
• In crooked teeth conditions (misaligned teeth formation),
• If there is a condition called “Toothy” in the front two teeth,
• If children experience adenoid discomfort, mouth breathing,
• If the lower or upper jaw is anterior compared to one another an orthodontist should be consulted.

What are the Treatment Methods in Orthodontics?
After the examination, orthodontists choose the treatment that is suitable for the teeth. These treatment methods are:
Self-Ligate Braces
A fast, aesthetic and healthy appearance can be achieved with self-ligate braces. The infrastructure of the treatment consists of the braces adhered to the teeth and the arch wires passing through the braces.
With the special locking mechanism, they are attached without the need for additional support and without the use of separate small pieces of wire as compared to the classical bracket treatment. Small pieces of wire or elastic rings used in conventional braces cause friction and discomfort in the teeth. However, this is not the case with self-ligate braces. With self-ligate braces, the teeth move much more easily, and the possibility of friction is minimized. With the reduction of friction, the treatment process is accelerated.
Since the teeth are used more comfortably and friction is less in self ligate braces, the arch wires inside can be used for a longer period of time. For this reason, session intervals can be extended up to 6 weeks instead of 4 weeks. Again, among the advantages of the self-ligate braces, the treatment time is shorter due to their easy opening and closing.
Aesthetic Braces (Ceramic braces)
Braces made of porcelain or zirconium, reflecting the tooth color and having a transparent appearance, are called aesthetic braces. It is usually applied to patients who are concerned about using metal braces. It is a treatment method that is much less noticeable in the mouth than metal braces and is generally used by adults. Besides the advantages of being transparent, aesthetic braces should be cleaned much more carefully. After meals, food residues can accumulate around the braces. In order to preserve its aesthetic appearance, you should pay attention to the cleanliness of the braces.
Lingual Treatment
Lingual braces treatment can also be defined as invisible braces. It provides treatment of teeth with brackets attached to the back of the teeth. Lingual braces treatment, which is generally preferred by artists, models, and athletes working in business life, can be used in people who have incompatibility in the lower and upper jaws, whose teeth close forward, who have aesthetic concerns and who have teeth grinding habits. In this treatment, first of all, the disorders in the teeth are diagnosed. They are different from the brackets applied to the front of the teeth. They are prepared in accordance with the inclination of the back of the teeth, and they are attached to the teeth accordingly with this special process. Depending on the condition of the teeth and jaw, the treatment is completed in 1 to 2.5 years.

Orthognathic Surgery
The general purpose of orthodontic treatments is to ensure that the teeth and jaws are in the best position. The upper jaw should cover the lower jaw. The lower jaw location should neither be behind nor forward. If there is incompatibility in the jaw, it may not be enough to just fix the teeth. As a result of this incompatibility, orthognathic surgery gets involved. Jaw surgeries correct the opening and closing of the jaw and the position of the jaw in these cases.
If the lower jaw is too far back or too far forward, if the upper jaw is behind compared to the lower jaw, if the jaw is located on the right or left side of the face or if only the posterior teeth are touching when closing, orthognathic surgery may be required.

I would like to share my views after about 3 months of treatment. First, I researched many countries and spoke to many clinics.
The clinic we went to for my fiancée's wisdom tooth extraction was so hygienic and sterilized, similar to the Covid days. The staff welcomed us with smiling faces, and the attention of the employees & the workmanship of the doctors were all perfect. I really recommend this dental clinic for anyone who wants dental care.
We started our dental treatment with Mr. Çağkan last week and it was completed today. This man is simply professional and friendly ! I would recommend a very successful dentist like him, along with his friendliness and sincerity to everyone.
I went there for a Wisdom tooth extraction and a root canal treatment. I would like to thank all Optimum Oral and Dental Health Center employees, especially Dr. Çağkan and Ms. Seren, for their high interest in my case and concern about my dental health. It is a super hygienic dental care center. Wishing them the best of luck !
